How To Build The Perfect Surf Wave In Seconds

With Malibu‘s new SURF GATE, it’s easier than ever to weight your boat for surfing. For starters, there’s no more stacking all the weight on one side. With SURF GATE, I simply weight my Wakesetter evenly and head out. I can start off with a wakeskate session and my driver can have the perfect surf wave ready in less time than it takes to switch boards. Here’s how I build the perfect wave in seconds thanks to SURF GATE. — Brian Grubb, Malibu Team Rider

Weight Evenly

With SURF GATE, it’s all about even weight. With just the four factory ballast tanks on my Wakesetter 22 MXZ filled and the Power Wedge down, I can do all my tricks and ever added wave-to-wave transfers.

Rule of Thirds

A good rule of thumb is to get the back two thirds of your Wakesetter in the water. This will give you your waves a good balance of height and length with plenty of power.

Extra Weight

I like to go surfing with a lot of people, so most of the time I won’t even add extra ballast, but whether it’s people or sacks, the rule is the same: Try to distribute weight so you have the back two thirds of the boat in the water.

How Much Is Too Much?

If you overweight the backend and get a ton of water going over the top of the SURF GATE, you can splash the face of the wave, making it less clean. Shoot for just a little water over the top and you’ll have long transitions and more than enough power.

More Weight Means More Speed

The more weight you have in the boat, the faster you want to go. Use your Speed Control Precision Pro or Zero-Off to go up one click at a time so you don’t overdo it. For reference, I usually ride at around 10.5-11 miles per hour.
