Scorpion Bay To Host State’s First-Ever CWSA Wake Surf World Championship in Arizona

For the first time ever the CWSA (Competitive Wake Surf Association) World Championship will be held in Arizona. Often held internationally, Scorpion Bay Marina will showcase the highest-ranked wake surfers in the world in men’s and women’s pro, outlaw, master, amateur, and junior surf divisions to battle for the World Championship title this October. WHAT: 92 athletes from 12 different countries (U.S., Japan, Russia, Canada, Germany, Chinese Taipei, France, South Korea, Switzerland, Belgium, Cyprus and Turkey) will compete October 7-10 as part of the weeklong championship competition. This event showcases top wake surfers displaying a wide variety of skills from blind, switch and surface spins to advanced aerials, shuv-its, grabs, combination tricks and more. This is the first time the CWSA world championship wake surfing event has been held in Arizona, the past two years being in Geneva Switzerland and Seoul Korea.

Event attendees will have the option of watching from the spacious outdoor patio at Scorpion Bay Grill, or along several docks – it is recommended to bring shade. Attendees can also enjoy freshly made food and drinks from Scorpion Bay Grill’s extensive menu of award-winning burgers, salads, flatbreads, desserts and more.

COMPETITION DETAILS: The competition is divided into five skill levels, and male and female categories. For each skill level except Juniors, there are 2 disciplines, surf style, and skim style. Most athletes compete in a single discipline; however, some compete in both.

  • Tuesday Events: Amateur, & Masters Preliminary Runs (roughly 7 hours of competition)
  • Wednesday Events: Amateur, Masters Final Runs & Outlaw Preliminary Runs; Amateur and Masters Awards (roughly 9 hours of competition)
  • Thursday Events: Outlaw Finals, Juniors & Pros; Preliminary Runs, Outlaw Awards (roughly 8 hours of competition)
  • Friday Events: Pro LCQ Runs, Juniors & Pros Finals, Awards (roughly 7 hours of competition)
  • Saturday: Reserved in case of inclement weather.

Daily start times will be weather dependent; this time of year, there may be wind in the early morning, but it usually flattens out by 10:00. Likely start between 8:00-10:00 am.  Sunset on the last day of the event at the venue is 6:00 pm
