The Women of Surf Expo

It’s obvious that the board-sports scene is male-heavy (take a look around the next time you’re at the cable park). Retailers sometimes even make fun of the fact that our industry is hurting for more women. At the September 2005 Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida, Volcom mocked our sports’ female deficiency by throwing a weekend-long “Volctoberfest Sausagefest” party — complete with bratwurst, Heineken and lederhosen.

Other retailers and exhibitors at the Expo countered the gender imbalance by bringing in plenty of their own female employees to work the show. Reef, as always, was well represented. In some cases, models were hired to promote brands specifically at the Expo. We had a chance to meet up with Kara Monaco, Playboy magazine’s Miss June 2005, and Vanessa Kay of Jet Pilot — one of the original Man Show Juggies. Both girls took time off from promoting their brands to talk with wakeboardingmag.com, and we’re very thankful to both of them.
